Fashion in everyday life

"From the beginning there was everything Elle …magical" – Karl Lagerfeld-<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Elle Magazine, the fashion authority always knowing the latest fashion, beauty and scoop. It's a lifestyle guide to every woman. Elle is not only gossip and fashion, but it also addresses controversial issues in contemporary society and culture. Elle is one of the world's leading fashion magazines among Vogue, Herpes Bazaar, Marie Claire and many more. I wonder what makes these magazines so special and why do people read them?

Ten years ago a Finnish publisher Aller Group tried to launch Elle Magazine in Finland in Finnish, but the project failed. Now in March Aller Group finally brought Elle Magazine to Finland and for now it has been a huge success.  It seems that everyone wants to have their one and I admit that I'm one of them. I was waiting the day when it came out like a little girl waiting for Santa. Since I was little I have been reading all kinds of women magazines like Vogue. As they say in Vogue "It's the Bible of fashion. If you want to know what's in fashion, you want to know what's in Vogue".

Women magazines like Elle are aimed at modern women without referencing to age. Women how live with and in fashion like Anna Wintour the editor-in-chief of American Vogue. Last week I read an article about her life and it really amazed me; fashion is her whole life. Many people take fashion as a joke like it would be just entertainment, but it's not true, for example, Anna Wintour. Among her job as an editor-in-chief of Vogue she also does some charity work. "Last year she got Vogue to contribute money to open beauty salons in Kabul, creating jobs for newly liberated Afghan women; a story on the project ran in the magazine." From www.time.com

Why do women buy these magazines? The main thing is simply because they just love fashion and the fact that they can be part of it by know and wearing the latest fashion. After reading two editions of the Finnish Elle Magazine I find it very hip and interesting. Women love to read fashion magazines. Women magazines like Elle and Vogue lift up my self-confidence when if I find something that I have, for example, a dress. Knowing that it's in fashion makes me feel good. Still I think that we shouldn't take fashion too seriously. A normal gal like me (not working in Vogue like Ms Wintour) should take fashion like entertainment, enjoy of it.

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."  -Coco Chanel-

The BIG issue

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Finland on the road to medal games<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I have followed for a four days how the media shows Finland's games and feelings after their winning USA in the World Championship games in 2008. I really like a lot of ice hockey and thats why I choose this issue.

The issue had been in a huge attention in Finland's media for example on TV and in newspapers. I follow how this issue is presented on Helsingin Sanomat and MTV3's evenings sports news at 10.20 PM.

On Thursday all the media had got crazy. Finland had beaten USA in semi-finals at early Thursday morning. Almost every Finn watched that huge spectacle where the Finland leads nearly the whole game but USA square the game in the last few minutes. Finally Finland scored in the extra time and won. In my opinion this was awesome! This was a huge piece of news in Finland's media. In MTV3's sports news they told detailed how the game move on and they told it very exited and proud about our so called national heroes. In addition they told how Finland's team coach, Doug Shedden, had been criticized in Finland. There was also talk about Finland's tomorrow's opponent, Russia. The Finnish team had been as well get stuck to airport of Halifax because there was some kind of problems with their properties. MTV3 sports news1

In Helsingin Sanomat there was only an article about Finland's teams’ guardians and that article filled almost the whole page. Unfortunately there was no article about the morning's game because the newspaper had not been published before the game ended. Helsingin Sanomat 05/15/2008

On Friday there was large article about that game in Helsingin Sanomat. Even though the issue was written very concise, it was accurate and clearly. Helsingin Sanomat 05/16/2008

In the MTV3s news there was again lot of issues. There was a game between Finland and Russia. Finland was defeated in the game and looses their opportunity to win gold. This really annoyed every patriotics Finns. It also could see on the face of the reporter who told the news.

They also speculated about skills of Russian team, the game of the day and what kind of history Finland and Russia has in ice hockey. MTV3 sports news2

On Saturday MTV3s sports news followed how Finland played with Sweden in bronze- game which ended for Finland's winning. It is always great when Finland beat Sweden and it came up quite distinctly. On the TV they also show up that when Finland beats Sweden, it’s always time to have national party.

There was also speculating about yesterday's game between Finland and Russia which was quite satisfied although they beat Finland. Nothing couldn’t damage their feelings about Finland’s bronze-medal. MTV3 sports news 05/17/2008 time 10.20 PM

In Helsingin Sanomat there was an article about yesterdays game, interview about Teemu Selänne, Doug Shedden and Mikko Koivu and how fans of team Finland behave in games.

Helsingin Sanomat 05/17/2008

On Sunday there was only a little article about yesterdays game about how Finland won the bronze. This made me feel that Finnish thinks that the bronze is pathetic.

In the sports news there were only two little interviews about Selänne and Koivu. Information about team Finland decreased when their games came close to the end.

Poisoned desserts

By Marika Vainio

Everybody knows a lovely fairytale about Snow White and her bad stepmother who tried to kill her with poisoned apple. In this time this story has come true within much more terrifying consequences. The poison killed the girl immediately.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The girl was gone for a dinner to her stepmother to talk how they should divide the bequests which her father had been left after passing away. At the beginning of the dinner they had a huge conversation about bequests. The conversation gets its peak when the girl wanted the whole house for her and asked the stepmother move away from there. The stepmother didn't like this idea at all and got angry about. She put poison into the dessert which she served to the girl and the affection of the poison girl died straight away.

The stepmother defended her behavior in previously: "Without George (the husband) I would be very poor and when Sally (the girl) said that she wanted to have the whole house I really loose my temper. It was stupid that George hadn't made any testament about his affairs and we were not married so the whole bequests would belong to his daughter. That's why I was not going to have anything. Now I am really regretting my behavior and I´m ready to take a responsible of what happened."

Analysing a media picture

Sarah Jessica Parker is a big celebrity in US. That's why it´s quite special that she has a dress that she had design.  The dress is beautiful and many of us could think that it would be quite expensive and it has good quality. But no, the dress is very cheap and that may lead up to that the quality of that dress is not very good.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The caption tells to us that Parker had been started to create her own garments and design them too. All those clothes are very cheap and it contains for example jeans, jackets, t-shirts, shoes and dresses.

Just the same, Parker looks in the picture very happy and proud about her design dress. This "fashion icon" called woman stands by a man and he looks also happy. I don´t know who the man is but that´s not very important. They both look like very festal and they are going to premiere of Parker´s movie "Sex and the city" in New York .The most important in that picture is the dress that Parker has design. The dress is blue and there is flowers printed on and the main idea of that dress is that they want to sell design clothes cheaply.  Although Parker has design the dress, it has produce by Steve & Barry. The main idea of that picture is that even if you are a celebrity, you can also use cheap clothes, without looking poor.

I may be right if I forecast that the dress would be a big popularity in this summer…

La Pizza Napoletana

By Oona Rossi<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Everyone loves pizza, right? Well have we ever thought about where the pizza really comes from and why is it called La pizza Margherita?

Pizza Margherita comes from Naples, Italy and it was made for the Queen of Italy; Margherita of Savoy in 1780. The pizza was the Queen's favorite because of its colors of the Italian flag: green (basil leaves), white (mozzarella), and red (tomatoes). In her honor the pizza was named Pizza Margherita.

In the heart of Naples chaotic traffic and Vespa noises is the first pizzeria in the world; Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba. It is famous all around the world of the most delicious pizzas ever. In the pizzeria the pizza makers (pizzaioli) are very firm about how the pizza should be done and served. A real Italian pizza must be baked in a wood-fired, served with enjoyment and eaten in a good company of friends.
